Artist Statement, By Katherine Abbott

As a child and young adult I never considered myself an artist because the drawings I created never received the praise that other children’s work received. It was through a pottery class in high school that I first discovered I could work with my hands to create. My interest in pottery continued until I found glass. My fascination with form, texture, and color easily translated into an obsession with hot glass in 1998 when I first started making glass beads. The ability to melt glass in an extreme flame, wind it around a steel mandrel, and then shape it became an instant passion for me. Using heat, gravity, and beautifartistul color palates, I create miniature works of glass art.

I am inspired by nature, textiles, and color trends in the fashion industry. Everywhere I look I can find a shape, texture, or pattern I can attempt to recreate in a glass bead. Often times I find mistakes I make are really an opportunity the glass is providing me to be open to new creations. Most of all, when I am making glass beads, I feel a calmness I rarely feel elsewhere, and a sense that I am doing exactly what I am meant to be doing. Each bead I create is a moment of my life, frozen in time, of tranquility that I find so comforting.

I promise to provide you with excellent craftsmanship and superb customer service.
